Twist & Earn! was developed by me, Paul Miller of Flow Circus, in 2005. As an individual whose has built a business creating value through performance and education, I knew there could be a better fund raising option for students and communities across the America.

The inspiration for the program was the result of my growing frustration with the status quo of school fund raising. The seemingly never-ending pressure to purchase over-priced, unwanted catalog merchandise (and of course candy) in the name of supporting education. It felt wrong.

Even more wrong was that half (or more) of the money I paid didn't go to the school or stay in the community. It left. It went to distributors and marketers to pay for stuff I didn't want and to generate profits for people I didn't know.

The turning point was when I paid $16 for a tin of popcorn outside a grocery store.

I was told that if the students sold all five cases, they would get to keep half. Had I just given the students $10, bought a $3 bag of popcorn inside, and flushed $2 down the toilet, everyone would have been better off... and I would have saved a buck!

I realized something was very wrong!

So began my quest to do better by our children and by our communities. I quickly determined that the way to raise money (create wealth) is not by selling a 50¢ candy bar for $1. That only cheats the person buying the candy bar. The way to raise money is to create new value. By having a car wash, or baking a pie, or recycling materials, or hosting a carnival, or by twisting a 6¢ balloon into $1 or more.

Value generated fund raising is the fund raising of the future. I hope that someday there are enough options for all schools to generate the money they need while performing a valuable to the students and the communities. Until then, I humbly submit Twist & Earn! as part of your responsible fund raising solution.
